Known for her incredible confidence, profound determination and all-around skills, Kadambini Ganguly is one of the many forgotten high fliers that India was gifted with. There are many interesting facts that make us feel amazed about Kadambini Ganguly:
- Kadambini was one of the 2 Indian women who were graduated in Indian History
- She was first Indian woman to be graduated in Medicine
- She was the first woman to pursue a graduation from the Bengal Medical College (GBMC) – 1886
- It is also notable that Kadambini was the first working mother in India – She was a mother; at the same time a doctor and a social activist too
This incredible woman proved herself inimitable in every means and broke many thresholds that lied ahead of women those days. It is truly unbelievable that though she had to take care of 5 children (kids of her husband’s first wife), Kadambini did not give up!
In the year 1892, she went to Europe for her higher studies; which were again something very unusual those days. But after her graduation from Europe, she became the foremost woman practitioner of Hippocratic Medicine in the whole Asian subcontinent.
Besides being a doctor, Kadambini also gave herself to Social activities. She participated and encouraged many women reforms and liberation. Even a year before her death, along with the famous poet Kamini Roy, Kadambini on behalf of an Enquiry Commission which was set up by the Government then visited Bihar and Orissa in order to question the conditions of women laborers who were working in the coal mines.
