India is abundant with numerous scientists and it gives a great feeling when we come across the names of so many women in the list. One among them is Tessy Thomas. Tessy Thomas, an intellectual from Kerala, is a renowned scientist at Defense Research and Development Organization. She is also the Project Director for Agni-VI missile and it is a great fact that the same was successfully tested in 2011. Apart from this project, she was also the associate project director of Agni-III, and Project Director of Agni-V. It is also striking news that Tessy Thomas is the first woman of India to head a missile project. Her knowledge and expertise in the field has earned her the name the “Missile Woman of India”.
Born in 1963 in a beautiful place called Alapuzzha (Kerala), Tessy graduated in Engineering from the Government Engineering College in Thrissur. She also holds a M. tech degree in Guided Missile from the Institute of Armament Technology, Pune, which is now known as the Defense Institute of Advanced Technology.
Her passion towards Rockets and Missiles was due to her locality near a rocket launching station. This took her to great heights in her career and our former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh motioned Tessy as an example for a woman who broke the glass ceiling and made her mark in a traditionally male bastion, to the Indian Science Congress.
Tessy Thomas was honored with Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for her contributions and efforts towards making our nation self reliant in Missile Technology.
